General information about Japan

Location

Japan is a the fourth biggest state of islands in the world, that is located in the east of Asia. Besides the four principal islands Japan counts 6.848 smaller islands to its landscape. Capital and the biggest city in Japan is Tokyo.

Japanese history

​

Speaking of Japanese history it is quite unique. Japan was isolated for 217 years from other countries. This period of isolation last from 1635-1852 due to a law known as the Sakoku Edict that restricted trade, banned foreign travel by Japanese, banned Christianity and made Japan off limits to most foreigners. The law was passed because Japan experienced a number of problems after contact with foreign powers. These included Japanese slaves being sent to Europe by the Portuguese, threats to Japanese sovereignty and epidemics such as a small epidemic of pox. Japan's long period of isolation put the country technologically behind the Western powers but it helped the country to develop a unique culture. In 1852, the American Navy effectively forced Japan to open its markets.

Nowadays Japan has a free markrét economy and it is the fourth largest exporter in the world. In general is the world's third largest economy and it is known as a highly industrialized country.

Political system in Japan

​

The political system in Japan is a constitutional monarchy that is based on capitalism. The emperor “Tenno” has no political power, but duties of representing the country. The parliament is elected every four years from the public in a free and secret way. Current prime minister is Shinzo Abe, head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
